Jón Jónsson
Jón Jónsson was born and raised in the small town of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland. All his life, he has been active musically, both in his local music school and in big productions in high school and college. After graduating from Boston University in 2009, where he regularly performed at local venues, Jón returned to Iceland and became a professional musician after releasing his first single in 2010.
He is accompanied by good friend Kristján Bjarnason, who plays piano and keyboards and helps Jón arrange and record music in their studio, Hljodmuli, and together the two create an infectious sound reminiscent of Gavin Degraw, Jack Johnson and John Mayer — but with its own singular Icelandic sound.
To get the groove going in the studio and when performing live, Jón works with solid musicians
Andri Bjartur Jakobsson,
Binni Unnsteinsson and
Steini Gudjonsson, who play drums, bass and electric guitar.
„Equal parts songwriting craft and vocal dexterity, each of Jón Jónsson’s songs plainly demonstrates the scope of his talent and boundless energy, along with his remarkable ability to enrapture an audience — no matter where in the world he goes.“
Jón‘s first two singles,
Lately and
Kiss in the Morning, got a solid airplay in Iceland, but Jón‘s third single,
When You‘re Around, was his first smash hit and reached the 2nd place on "Lagalistinn," the official top 30 list in Iceland, and 1st place on Iceland‘s most popular radio station, Bylgjan.
Jón Jónsson performed his forth single,
Sooner or Later, at Iceland‘s new concert hall, Harpan, at FM957 People‘s Choice Awards, where he also was rewarded as
the best new artist with over 60% of the votes.
Jon‘s debut album,
Wait for Fate, was released on the 4th of July in 2011 and in early 2013 it received a Gold Record in Iceland. Along with the album, Jón released his fifth single,
Wanna Get In and the song earned the number 2 spot on "Lagalistinn".
In February 2012 Jón was nominated as the most promising act in the Icelandic music scene at the Icelandic Music Awards. However, Universal‘s Of Monsters and Men won the award.
In June, Jón was voted
the best singer at the FM957 People‘s Choice Awards. In the same month, he released
All, You, I, his first single that cannot be found on his debut album. The song instantly became a hit and was the most played song on the Icelandic radio stations in July.
Jón Jónsson has been active in the Icelandic music scene and is able to perform both on his own and with his band. He has played in small get-togethers as well as big concerts such as the
Icelandic Culture Night, the
Icelandic Independence Day, and the
Þjóðhátíð Music Festival, where he has performed for thousands of people.
In August 2012, Jón traveled to New York City along with his friend, Kristján Bjarnason, to play for
Epic Records‘ CEO and Chairman,
L.A. Reid. After perfoming at Mr. Reid‘s office, Jón was offered a record deal, which he signed a week later.
Along with being a musician, Jón is the editor-in-chief of a popular weekly for young adults, called Monitor. He regularly has open lectures for young people, where he educates them about different topics, such as money, tobacco and lifestyle in general. Last spring Jón lent his voice to the main character in the Icelandic voice-over for the animated feature, The Lorax. In September, Jón‘s team FH won the Icelandic top soccer league and became a national champion.
